Win some! And eh..... needs some work!

I am thrilled that the folks at the Frillie and Funkie blog have selected me as the winner for the Autumn colors challenge!  I will be guesting a design challenge for Frillie and Funkie in early November - so stay tuned!

And to keep my balance with this great news, am sharing a "how the heck do I do this" moment regarding the Tim Holtz luminary die - love what I see others doing, but clearly I need more work here, lol!

This sample was made with 80# card stock (I am still trying to discern what all of this means, but what it felt like is card stock heavier than double sided scrapbook paper, but not as thick as cardboard, and not as stiff as bristol vellum).

I cut, folded, adhered my 1/8" Sookwang tape pieces, painted with an inexpensive acrylic metallic paint, and then heat embossed with fine copper embossing powder from Ranger using a great marble pattern from a wheeled stamp.  I learned the following:

  • This weight card stock takes acrylic paint (Folkart Metallic Copper) very well, even when the paint is diluted with a little water.
  • When dry, the pieces also took well to Versamark inking, stamped with a marbleized pattern wheel, followed by an application of fine embossing powder which was then heat embossed.
  • The painted and embossed pieces folded well, but when assembling, I had troubles matching edges and corners well because I had placed the adhesive tape first, and THEN painted - oops!  Lots of gaps, even after trying to re-seal with Glossy Accents.
  • I need to seriously figure out the roof piece! Don't paint both sides at once!  And maybe card stock is not the best/sturdiest option.

The windows are packaging acetate, on which a flourish stamp is inked with Indigo Blu's Flitter Glu and then covered with Indigo Blu's "Yorkshire Dales" glittering leaf.  That panel is then covered with Tim Holtz Frosty Film (covering the flaked image).  I love the look, but forgot this incredible gilded flake is opaque, so when a battery-operated tea light is placed inside, it just looks like a shadow.

Ah well, lots to learn, but nonetheless, I love this little piece.....will be trying again soon!

Thanks for visiting!

Mixed Media Birthday Book

This was my first-ever project.... a little large but I learned a lot, and got to try many techniques!  Very photo heavy post!

The outside covers were made with a technique demonstrated by Liesbeth Fidder at Paper Artsy.  I mounted this "weathered wood" onto chipboard covered with scrapbooking paper.  The flower is Sizzix Gulian die (658529).

The book was bound using this this method by Candace Scarborough.  I reinforced with some ruler printed ribbon, some hand printed paper, and washi tape.

Inside are double-sided pages which were covered with various mixed media techniques, using stamps by Lynne Perella and others, and various die cuts .

The graceful curved edges are accomplished with Elizabeth Craft Designs "Agatha Edges" die.

The other edges are made using Tim Holtz On the Edge dies (Clustered Stars, Butterflight, and Distressed Doily).

Here are some detailed shots.

The handle is clear packaging, painted with metallic alcohol inks, then cut and embossed with Sizzix Antique Handles die/embossing folder set (658462).

The butterfly was stamped with StaysOn ink onto Wendy Vecchi's Clearly for Art, fussy cut and shaped by heating with a heat tool.  You can see Vivian Keh's tutorial for the background  here .

This page was embossed with Spellbinders Embossibilities folder Roman Romance (E3D-010) and then washed with layers of dilute watercolor.  The pearl accents are Liquid Pearls.

The inside covers were made with textured rice paper, misted with Ranger's Color Wash mists in blue, yellow and red, per Contadina K's tutorial here .

The latch was made using a Sizzix label die, using painted card that was also stamped with script and covered with matte medium in several coats to make (and keep) it pliable.  It secures with a small magnet.

The back cover is similar to the front.  Thanks for visiting!

Gift Card a la' Contadina K

I love Vivian Keh's work at Contadina K and find a lot of inspiration from her great use of textures and color.  This project is a spin-off on her project using the Sizzix Seed Packet die, which you can view here.

The flower is Sizzix die Flower Layers with Leaf #2 (658229).  I colored the card stock with various Distress Paints before cutting, and finished with Liquid Pearls.  The leaf is from the Tim Holtz Spring Greenery strip die cut from green card stock, and again finished with some Liquid Pearls.

I used various Izinks to color the seed packet, and finished with some gold "Blooms" spray from Prima.  I used a little magnet as a closure.

Beach card

This mixed media card was made for a friend who loves the beach.

The background is a wonderful rice paper that I got at my local art store, mounted on turquoise card stock.

The sand is made with repeated layers of TextureZ Gold Mine shimmer paint (it is really more of a paste)..  The froth is Golden fiber paste, with some Golden glass bead gel along the edge with the sand.  It is topped with soft matte gel and various small beads (both products from Finnabair's line with Prima).  The "bubbles" above the froth are created with Finnabair's 3D gloss gel.  You can find the technique demonstrated by Kazia Krzyminska by clicking on her name.

The word "Beach" was cut from the Sizzix Wingo Zingo Alphabet strip die.

Frillie & Funkie Autumn Color Challenge

This is my first challenge, after collecting a lot of supplies over the past year from Linda's wonderful  Funkie Junkie Boutique !  The challenge is hosted by Frilly and Funkie blog .

Here is my card:

I used a Vantage embossing folder for the background, a Tim Holtz Thinlits die for the "grass" behind (from the 4 part Holiday Greenery set, 658759), the Tim Holtz Pumpkin Parts and Movers and Shapers Tattered Leaves for the leaves.

The leaves were embossed with a script folder , and then sprayed with the new Distress stains, as well as some Dylusion sprays, using Vivian Keh's Dousing method.

Then they were finished with Distress Crackle paint.

The pumpkin has the gold Distress stain as a finish (mopping up after spraying on the mat and burnishing).

The inside was cut with a Sizzix label die from a tag colored with mopped up distress gold and bronze stains on top of the leaf colors, placed on some natural fiber paper.

So glad I am finally using my stash!!  Thanks for visiting!
